Here is the razor and blades that I bought at a local store recently.
The razor came in a plastic case. The blades are packaged with paper.
The razor cost less than $10. The blades are not as cheap as I was hoping that they would be, but using this shaving system will use much less plastic than modern disposables in the long run. I am still looking for a definitive answer about the number of shaves I should perform with each blade.
I found out from the shopkeeper that these items were stocked upon repeated requests by elderly gentlemen. If you have some retro alternatives in mind that you cannot seem to find in stores, consider asking at Mom and Pop places where the elderly shop.

[…] planet. Martin’s blog points out that there’s good reason to go back to using my old double-edge razor and purchasing just blades instead of those fancy plastic cartridges, each of which is separately […]

Where are you finding blades packaged in cardboard? I bought a safety razor at an antique store today, but the blades I’ve found so far come in a plastic case that is packaged in a blister pack, like the red one in your picture. I tried 3 different stores: Long’s Drugs, Walgreen’s, and a local grocery store that carried Western Family brand. All 3 had the blades in plastic.

Hi again! I guess you saw that I linked to you in my post today about plastic-free shaving. What shave soap have you found that works for you? I’d love it if you would comment on that and any other aspects of shaving with a safety razor that might be relevant to males!

Try a straight razor if you are looking for a retro alternitive. in is a bit of an initial investment but my husband says that it is the best shave he ever had and he has had the same razor for a year now. there may be some learning involved. You need to know how to sharpen it, and you shave differntly with it than with a modern razor. also be aware that if you get a cheap version the will often times be sharpened the wrong way and will need to be sent to a profesional knife grinder to be fixed. often time packagedin cardboard, marble handle and last forever, it is even somthing you can pass down.
just a thought
