The vast majority of toilet seats are plastic. You might think that buying a wooden toilet seat is the green choice. Wood is a renewable resource and when it breaks, it is biodegradable.

A recent New Yorker video reveals that some wooden products that are made in China use illegally harvested Russian wood as their source material. I have worked in the forest industry in Canada and I have observed both responsible and irresponsible logging. The responsible people get to be that way because of the carrots and sticks that come their way from government. I think it’s safe to assume that illegal loggers in Asia aren’t busy cordoning off greenbelts.

Consumer choice is a bit limited with this product. I have been looking for a replacement and it looks like there is only one kind of seat in this town and it’s plastic.

A good quality molded wood seat might last longer than a cheap plastic seat and it is probably more biodegradable. This is one of those difficult decisions. I am resorting to makeshift repairs on the old seat while I continue to shop around.

While I was researching, I found a slightly amusing toilet seat picture, but no toilet seats that are targeted towards the green crowd. Bemis is a leading manufacturer that talks the environmental talk on its website. One of their products could be the best choice.
