People want them because they like the hubcap look instead of the plain black steel wheel. It doesn't bother me to see a car without any hubcaps on and in most cases the car looks better without them (you can easily tell its plastic and it looks cheap). What auto company's should do is to do away with steel wheels/hubcaps. The auto company's should offer even base model cars with some kind of decent looking rim.
