Up until a few minutes ago, I did not know that there are plastic gadgets to put in the washing machine and plastic gadgets to put in the dryer. I have been doing laundry for a couple of decades without this stuff, so I think I can get by for the rest of my life without a BraBall or a set of dryer balls. I looked at a page of laundry tips for college students and there is no mention of these products. I’ll take that as a good sign.
I was going to dedicate a whole post to the pointlessness of the plastic BraBall, but I discussed it with people who own bras and they told me that it didn’t seem entirely pointless. Hand washing or simply placing bras in a pillowcase in the washer also work to extend the useful life of delicate garments.
We have been living without a clothes dryer for over three years and I have unscientific evidence that clothes last longer when you do not use a clothes dryer. I experimented with using natural fiber rope as a clothesline this summer and it worked out fine. I’m not sure about the useful lifespan of a hemp clothesline, but rope is pretty cheap.
Wooden clothes drying racks are not all that cheap but they come in very handy for drying clothes indoors. LifeHacker has a tip about installing a second shower curtain rod specifically for drying out clothes.

As the owner of several bras, and what goes in them, and can assure you that there is no need for any plastic gadget to keep them from falling apart. One tip is to hook them before putting in dryer so the metal hooks don’t catch on other clothes and cause the bra to get all tangled up. Other than that, my bras have lasted for years just fine. Those who need to be more careful should just hang them, like you said, which has the added advantage of saving energy.
