90% of the time, a fast food chain will charge me for a SMALL beverage, and fill whatever size cup you bring to them. Most of their cost is in the cup and lid, anyway. Same goes for coffee refills. The cost for using your own mug is usually the same price as a small coffee- or less. I have asked at McD's if I am allowed to reuse one of their own cups, and have often been given a free refill. I always ask first.

Beth, does your travel mug have a clearly labeled volume? It seems like there should be no issue with bringing your own mug to McDonalds. I often get the impression that there is one issue at the retail level around the world. Employees find it easier to say NO to anything outside the norm than to use any of their own discretion. It's human nature. Their employer doesn't give them any POWER so they don't want any responsibilty.

Believe it or not, I was able to get a soda from McDonald's in my travel mug one time when for some reason I was having a craving for soda and didn't want to waste a can or bottle. Coffee of course is routinely served in customers' own mugs these days. I can't see why other drinks can't be served this way.
