I use a safety razor as a plastic-less alternative to disposable razors. When I first made the switch, a few people in America left comments about how they could not find razors packaged without plastic. Hopefully that has changed now that retro-shaving is cool. Here in Tunisia, I have at least three brands to choose from. Gillette blades can be found in cardboard packs of 10, hanging on cardboard display panels right at the checkout.
People who follow me on Twitter may recall that I was sold a single Gillette razor blade last week by a shopkeeper who was down to his last pack. I had a bad experience with cheap razor blades earlier this year, but I decided to give it another shot with these Shark brand blades.
This is going to be a very short review. These Egyptian made blades do a perfectly adequate job. I would buy them again.
Update: You can now buy a box of 100 of these Shark brand razor blades on Amazon at a pretty good price

I recently decided to switch to a safety razor as well, mostly because I’m tired of all the crappy plastic ones. What type of safety razor do you have? How do you find the shave quality compares to something like a Mach 3?

There’s also an Israeli company that makes awesome blades that never rust. I get them through a guy on eBay. He sells a package of 100.

Duane, getting a close shave with a safety razor requires a bit of technique. I actually spent almost a year doing things not quite right before I learned a few details from shaving enthusiasts on twitter and also from Tunisian barbers. I have a very basic razor, the same type sold by RetroRazor.com
I bought a super cheap one and tried it once. It didn’t go well. I think you need to get one with machined parts rather than stamped.
Beth, Good strategy, razor blades are so small that you can get several years supply shipped without too much cost to your wallet or the environment. I had to resort to eBay for Brita filters this year. They are a bit bigger
