Duane, getting a close shave with a safety razor requires a bit of technique. I actually spent almost a year doing things not quite right before I learned a few details from shaving enthusiasts on twitter and also from Tunisian barbers. I have a very basic razor, the same type sold by RetroRazor.com

I bought a super cheap one and tried it once. It didn't go well. I think you need to get one with machined parts rather than stamped.

Beth, Good strategy, razor blades are so small that you can get several years supply shipped without too much cost to your wallet or the environment. I had to resort to eBay for Brita filters this year. They are a bit bigger :(

There's also an Israeli company that makes awesome blades that never rust. I get them through a guy on eBay. He sells a package of 100.

I recently decided to switch to a safety razor as well, mostly because I'm tired of all the crappy plastic ones. What type of safety razor do you have? How do you find the shave quality compares to something like a Mach 3?
