I try to reduce the amount of packaging that I bring into my house but sometimes I impulsively buy something just because I like the packaging. I tell myself that I can reuse that packaging. I don’t have a specific need for that material but I somehow just know that it is the solution to a problem that I don’t even know I have. This morning as I was putting away the empty egg containers that I actually do use (for containing eggs that are sold unpackaged from the back of a truck), I saw an old frenemy in the back of the cupboard. The burlap potato bag that I bought this winter.
As I wondered what to do with it for about the hundredth time it dawned on me that I should just write this post asking for suggestions. So what do you think I should do with this material?
Plant some flowers in it. It is a perfect bag for placing flowers outside on the porch. When it rains the water should go through it with no troubles.
I know this seems lame, but I would probably use the bag for its original purpose and store onions and potatoes in it. Maybe you could take it to the grocery and put your produce in this bag instead using one of those flimsy plastic bags at the store.
My parents would reuse polypropylene feed bags 100s of times for storing potatoes, beans, rolled oats, even kindling. When the became too worn and full of holes they would be used as a garbage bag.
There’s a huge market for using feed sacks as upholstery…Sewing might not be your bag baby (pun intended) but it’s a super durable burlap sack and would be great for some kind of crafty sewing project. Good luck!
I am using it as a table cloth for a table that is also made out of ‘junk’ I built it to sit over my cooking gas canisters on the balcony
It would be a nice winter project to hook a small rug into the burlap? It’s easy and here’s a video to show you how to do it– http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCVaRxyQ-jo
